BC1: Covenants & 16 Prayers for Our Future WORLD By Wilfred Ukpong

Nigerian-born and Oxford-based multidisciplinary artist, social practice researcher and award-winning filmmaker, Wilfred Ukpong returns to Nigeria with his first solo show "BC1: Covenants & 16 Prayers for Our Future World" after ten years of absence from the Nigerian art scene. Ukpong’s whose expanded art practice encompasses sculpture, painting, installation, performance, photography, architecture, film, music/sound composition and community interventions employ his works as context-specific platforms to engender social development, cultural evolution, environmental consciousness and change.

In BC1: Covenants & 16 Prayers For Our Future World, the artist employs bold futuristic visual narratives through mediums of art photograph, sculpture and ambience of complementary soundscape and film score compositions to reflect and explore notions of spirituality and hope using a conceived otherworldly Afro-futuristic dystopian universe and his precarious sense of place and belonging to the Niger Delta as his sources.

The show will feature twenty artworks made between 2012 and 2017 in Ukpong’s co-owned Blazing Century Studios. A sound sculpture and three major museum-pieces entitled Covenant-1, Covenant-2, and Covenant-3 are vaguely anthropomorphic recumbent large sculptures whose overall forms are doubled as a wheeled chest and a display repository for seemingly sacred objects. The enigmatic contents of these sculptures which appear as props in Ukpong’s “Future World” film tend to resist taxonomic classification, embodying both engineering and liturgical symbolism. Each sculpture is available at $50,000.00. Featured also in the show is an installation of sixteen large fine art photographic editions (220L x 220H x 0.6W cm) each available at $20,000.00. These are images captured during the Future Worlds shoot and made with pigment on aluminium panel. Each work is framed using recycled and repurposed materials found in the Niger-Delta.

The art exhibition will hold at the prominent Omenka Gallery in Ikoyi Lagos and Transcorp Hilton Abuja before travelling to sixteen international locations. Collectors and institutions partners are invited to engage not only as sponsors and patrons but also as catalysts for change by purchasing the extraordinary works conceived by and supporting the socially engaged art and film project in a socio-environmentally devastated region in Southern Nigeria.
