What Should I Know About Cervical Cancer Screening? by RichardMuse(: 7:07 am On Apr 07, 2017
Cervical cancer is one of the dominant reason for increasing mortality rate across the world. Recent reports reveal that millions of women struggling with cervical cancer lose their lives every year. This fatal disease develops due to multiplication of abnormal cells in cervix and nearby cervical region. It is mostly caused due to human papillomavirus (HPV). Women experiencing symptoms like pain in pelvis, abnormal vaginal bleeding, and painful intercourse should promptly consult a well-experienced gynecologist. This health condition is highly treatable if caught in its early stage.
Screening Tests for Cervical Cancer
Screening tests can help diagnose the presence of underlying cervical cancer in women. Women who regularly visit gynecologists for a complete inspection of health are at much lower risk of getting cervical cancer. Major screening tests for cervical cancer include the following.
• Pap smear Or Pap test - This is a significant screening test which can be used to identify abnormal cells and tissues in cervix. Gynecologists access the vaginal area with the help of a special medical instrument called as a ‘speculum’. Doctor inserts it into the v*gina of patient that enables them to thoroughly examine the cells inside cervix. Doctors collect the cells and send it to a laboratory for obtaining a precise report. In addition to this, it can also detect infections, inflammation, warts, and precancerous cells that may lead to cervical cancer in future.
• HPV Testing - There are over 100 different types of human papillomavirus (HPVs) which can deteriorate patient’s health. Out of these, HPV 16 and HPV 18 are known to fuel up the occurrence of cervical cancer in women. HPV testing helps the medical care provider to confirm the presence of any HPV that increases the chances of cervical cancer. It is usually performed along with Pap smear test. The Pap test samples sent to laboratory may also be checked for HPV.
When to Get Screened?
Patients may commence Pap evaluation procedure at the age of 21. Whereas, women 30 years old or older, can opt for an HPV test along with Pap smear to minimize the risk of cervical cancer. Both of these screening tests are considered to be highly reliable for diagnosing cervical cancer. Early detection and cervical cancer treatment help achieve best beneficial outcomes. Patients should choose a qualified and experienced surgeon for a successful treatment. Cervical cancer treatment cost may vary depending on its stage.
Test Results of Cervical Screening Program
Women with normal test results do not need to worry. However, they should indulge in regular health check-up sessions to avoid any problem. If the results show any abnormality in cervix, gynecologists may refer the patients to a cancer specialist. Cancer specialists will evaluate patient’s health condition thoroughly. Surgeons may order some additional tests like a colposcopy, cervical biopsy, loop electrosurgical excision, and cone biopsy. They will recommend a suitable treatment plan depending on patient’s health requirement.
Screening tests can considerably help to reduce the steadily increasing mortality rate due to cervical cancer nowadays. However, these traditional screening tests involve certain risks. Patients should clearly discuss and understand the benefits and potential risks associated with screening tests for cervical cancer with respective surgeons. Also, women should not hesitate to ask any other doubts and health-related concerns.
